About the Historical Timeline

Why do market crashes and rallies matter for investors?

Understanding market history is the single most powerful antidote to FOMO and panic selling. Every crash on this timeline was followed by a recovery. Every bull market was followed by a correction. Investors who held through the 2008 crisis saw their investments fully recover by 2013. Those who panic-sold at the bottom locked in their losses permanently. Historical context transforms emotional reactions into informed decisions.

Where does the price data come from?

All price data in the mini charts and our investment calculator comes from our local market data store (Apache Parquet format, queried via DuckDB). This gives us sub-10ms query times with no external API dependencies. Historical prices reflect verified closing prices from financial exchanges. Note that SPY data begins in 1993, QQQ in 1999, so some pre-1993 events use proxy instruments.

Can I calculate what my own investment would be worth from any event?

Yes - each event card has a "Run in Calculator" button that pre-fills the investment calculator with $10,000 invested at the event's key date. You can change the amount, try different assets, and add dividend reinvestment. Our "My Biggest Miss" feature is also pre-linked for each event so you can calculate the cost of panic-selling at the worst moment.

Is this financial advice?

No. This timeline is an educational tool only. Historical returns do not guarantee future results. Every asset shown has experienced periods of significant loss. Before making any investment decisions, consult a qualified financial advisor who understands your personal financial situation, goals, and risk tolerance.
